Grocery Store Project: Habibullah Safi
Habibullah Safi's Vision
A stable store for an ill breadwinner
Habibullah is illiterate, not having any prior education and having worked many years as an unskilled labourer, having to physically endure days and nights to support his family. As a result of the heavy work and difficult conditions Habibullah developed a chronic back problem, suffering from spinal stenosis.
Since spinal stenosis limited Habibullah’s ability to work, he started a small grocery shop one year ago. Because of Habibullah’s illness he struggles to work full time, so his 22-year old son helps him in the shop whenever he is needed.
Despite all of this, Habibullah’s family barely meets ends and faces financial difficulties.
The loan would aid in supporting the business through diversifying products, increasing the family’s income, strengthening their financial stability, and contributing to Habibullah’s medical treatments.
The Challenge
Constrained by limited product line
Habibullah's greatest business challenge was a limited product line. With most of his available capital tied up and existing debt limiting his purchasing power, he could only stock a small selection of essential grocery items, leaving customer demand unmet.
As a result, the shop was unable to reach its full earning potential. The limited inventory constrained sales, kept profit margins thin, and prevented the business from generating enough income to improve the family's financial situation.
For Habibullah, whose spinal stenosis has already limited his ability to work, this also meant fewer resources to provide for his family and fund the medical treatment he needs.
The Impact
Security is medicine for the soul
Through the riba-free loan, Habibullah is able to diversify his product portfolio and increase sales. This led to more profits and customers, granting Habibullah more security in his grocery store.
From the security and profits, Habibullah is able to take stress off his financial situation and pay medical bills for his illness, all while growing his business.
